How often should you descale a tankless water heater?
An annual maintenance assessment is a useful starting point, but the right flushing interval depends on your water, usage and model instructions.

Why scale builds up in the heat exchanger
Hard water contains dissolved minerals, commonly calcium and magnesium. When water is heated, deposits can accumulate on water-contact surfaces. In a tankless heater, buildup in the heat exchanger can interfere with heat transfer and water flow. Deposits at a faucet do not tell you exactly how much scale is inside the appliance, but they are a reason to ask about water quality and maintenance history.
Homes in Sunland, La Crescenta and surrounding communities do not all receive the same blend of water. Avoid using a single neighborhood hardness number as a substitute for checking your supplier and testing the water at the property. A treatment system also changes the picture: record what is installed and whether it has actually been maintained.
Set an interval for your model and household
Start with the current instructions for the exact model. Rinnai homeowner flushing guidance recommends at least annual flushing; follow the applicable model manual and professional advice for your water conditions. Rinnai, Navien and Noritz publish model-specific guidance, and the required procedure, approved solution and maintenance conditions can differ. An annual maintenance assessment is a practical starting discussion, not a claim that every manufacturer requires the same flushing schedule.
A household with high hot-water use and measured mineral buildup may need a different interval from a lightly used home with properly maintained treatment. Previous service findings help: ask what deposits were observed, whether performance changed after flushing and what interval the technician recommends. If the service history is unknown, an inspection establishes a better baseline than guessing that the heater is overdue by a fixed number of months.
Keep the date, model, work performed and follow-up recommendation. Warranty coverage may depend on following the applicable instructions; maintenance does not guarantee a warranty claim will be accepted.
Symptoms worth checking
Reduced hot-water flow, fluctuating temperature or a model-specific alert can justify a service call. They do not prove scale is the only cause. An inlet filter restriction, a mixing-valve problem, demand above capacity or a combustion-related fault can produce overlapping symptoms. Record whether the issue affects one fixture or the whole home, and photograph any displayed code without removing the cover.
Do not keep resetting a fault to force operation. If there is a gas odor, a carbon monoxide alarm or visible fire damage, leave the area and contact emergency services or the gas utility from a safe location. Routine maintenance booking is not the response to an active safety emergency.
What a professional maintenance visit covers
Descaling uses the appliance-approved procedure and compatible materials to circulate a solution through the water side, followed by the specified rinse and return-to-service checks. The existence of service valves does not make every generic online flushing procedure appropriate for your model. Acidic solutions, electrical equipment and isolation errors can cause injury or damage; ask a qualified professional if you are unsure.
Flushing is not the same as inspecting the complete appliance. Discuss inlet-filter care, leak checks, vent and intake condition, and operating performance as applicable to the model and agreed service scope. Condensing equipment may have additional condensate-system requirements. Internal venturi, burner, gas and combustion work should remain with qualified technicians using the manufacturer instructions.
This matters after wildfire exposure too. Water-side descaling does not remove ash from a combustion air path. A heater exposed to smoke or ash needs the appropriate separate assessment, not an assumption that a flush solves everything.
Prevent the next problem
Treatment should address the water actually entering the heater. Ordinary sediment or carbon filtration generally does not remove dissolved hardness. A suitable softener changes hardness; other treatment technologies have different capabilities and limits. Review compatibility with the appliance and the maintenance requirements of the treatment itself.

Frequently asked questions
Should every tankless heater be flushed once a year?
Not necessarily. Use the model instructions, measured water conditions, usage and previous service findings to set the interval. An annual assessment is a starting point for that discussion.
Does descaling fix every lukewarm-water problem?
No. Scale is one possible cause; demand, filters, mixing and appliance faults can require different work.
Does a water filter eliminate the need for descaling?
Do not assume so. Ordinary filtration may leave dissolved hardness in the water. Check the treatment type, results and appliance guidance.
