Tank & Heat Pump Water Heaters: common questions

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

A leak from the tank itself generally means replacement, while a leaking connection or valve may be repairable. Thermostats, heating elements and some burner components can often be repaired too. The decision also depends on the heater's age, condition, warranty, repair history and whether it still meets your household's needs. We identify where the problem starts and explain repair versus replacement before work begins. If water is actively leaking, avoid wet electrical equipment and shut off the water supply only if you can do so safely.

What is a heat pump water heater?

A heat pump water heater transfers heat from the surrounding air into stored water instead of relying entirely on electric resistance elements. It generally uses less electricity than a standard electric tank, but it needs suitable space, airflow and a condensate drain. It also cools the surrounding area and produces some operating noise. Many hybrid models use backup electric elements during high demand. We assess installation conditions and household usage before recommending one; rebate eligibility depends on current program rules. Our heat pump guide explains the trade-offs in more detail.

“I needed a service for a Rinnai tankless water heater for a tenant in Eagle Rock. I called Leon plumbing and was surprised that they could have a tech out in about an hour. The tech did a complete service for $275, which seemed somewhat reasonable, and a needed valve replacement for another $275, which (though steep) was at least done quickly. I would recommend them for speed, good communications, and quality of the work.”
