Tankless Descaling & Annual Maintenance
Tankless heaters do not store a tank of hot water, but their heat exchangers still need care. Mineral deposits and debris can affect heat transfer and water flow, while combustion components need model-appropriate inspection. Leon Plumbing provides tankless maintenance for homeowners in Sunland, Tujunga, La Crescenta, Glendale, Burbank and neighboring communities. We review the manufacturer’s instructions, your water conditions and the service history rather than treating every heater as the same appliance.
Why local hard water makes maintenance important
Calcium and magnesium in hard water can leave scale as water is heated. Deposits inside a heat exchanger can reduce effective heat transfer and restrict passages. Water hardness varies by supply source and neighborhood; a city name alone does not establish the exact hardness at your house. We discuss testing or your water supplier’s information instead of assigning one hardness number to the whole service area.
Do not wait for a fault code to begin thinking about maintenance. Reduced performance, changing flow or unusual operation deserves attention, but a heater may accumulate scale before obvious symptoms appear. Water treatment can be part of a prevention plan; it does not remove the need to follow the manufacturer’s service requirements. Ordinary sediment filtration is not the same as water softening.
Annual descaling and flushing
An annual service review is a useful starting point, with the actual flushing interval adjusted to the model’s guidance, water quality and usage. Some installations need more frequent attention. We check whether isolation/service valves are present and whether the heater can be serviced safely. A missing valve set can make proper flushing more involved than expected.
Descaling circulates a manufacturer-appropriate solution through the isolated water path, followed by the specified rinse and return-to-service procedure. Solution selection, circulation time and disposal should follow the applicable instructions. A quick drain is not equivalent to heat-exchanger descaling. We verify operation afterward and record the service so the next appointment is based on history rather than guesswork.
Inlet filter and venturi cleaning are different tasks
The cold-water inlet filter can collect debris that reduces flow. Its inspection and cleaning must follow the model manual, including isolation and protection from hot water. This is different from washing a faucet aerator. If the filter repeatedly collects material, we consider whether the plumbing supply needs further investigation rather than simply clearing it again.
Venturi cleaning concerns the combustion/air path on models that use that assembly; it is not part of the water-side flushing circuit. Accessing and servicing combustion components belongs to a qualified technician following model-specific procedures. We inspect the relevant parts and clean only where the instructions and observed condition support it. Homeowners should not remove covers or adjust combustion settings.
What to keep between service visits
Keep the area accessible and avoid storing objects against air openings or service access. From a safe ground-level position, notice visible damage or obstruction near accessible exterior vent terminations, but do not climb, dismantle venting or reach into the appliance. Report leaks, repeated error messages or a change in performance rather than waiting for the next routine appointment.
Retain your model number, installation date and service invoices. Ask us to document descaling, filter work and any recommended follow-up. If the appliance already loses hot water or shows a recurring code, book diagnostic repair instead of assuming maintenance alone will solve it. Leon Plumbing, family-owned since 1983 and licensed under CSLB C-36 #474827, can help you set a practical maintenance plan for your particular system.
Maintenance: common questions
Should my tankless heater be serviced every year?
Annual review is a practical starting point. Follow the model’s instructions and adjust flushing frequency for measured water hardness, usage and service history.
Is flushing the same as descaling?
A proper descaling service uses the model-appropriate procedure and solution to address mineral deposits. Simply draining water is not the same process.
Does hard water affect tankless heaters?
Yes. Dissolved minerals can deposit in heated water passages. Hardness varies by property and water source, so testing helps determine the maintenance plan.
Is venturi cleaning included in every flush?
No. Venturi service is separate combustion-side work and is model- and condition-dependent. A qualified technician follows the applicable manufacturer procedure.
Will a water filter prevent all scale?
No. Sediment filters do not necessarily remove dissolved hardness minerals. Water treatment choices and appliance maintenance should be evaluated separately.
