What is a heat pump water heater — and is it worth it?

Heat pump water heaters are the fastest-growing option for LA homes replacing an old tank. Here's how they work, how they compare to tankless and instant electric heaters, and when one makes sense.

What is a heat pump water heater?

It's an electric water heater that pulls heat out of the surrounding air and moves it into the tank, like a refrigerator working in reverse. Because it moves heat instead of creating it, it uses far less electricity than a standard electric tank — the U.S. Department of Energy rates them about two to three times more efficient.

Are heat pump water heaters worth it?

For many Southern California homes, yes — especially if you're replacing an older electric tank, have solar, or want to move off gas. Our mild climate suits them well. They cost more up front than a basic tank, so the payback depends on your current energy bills and any utility rebates available when you buy.

Heat pump vs. tankless — which is better?

A tankless heater gives endless hot water on demand and saves space; a heat pump tank is usually the most energy-efficient electric option. Households with big back-to-back hot water use often prefer tankless; homes going all-electric often prefer a heat pump. We'll lay out both for your home.

What about instant electric or electric tankless heaters?

Electric tankless units heat water only as it flows and need no venting, but whole-home models draw a lot of power and may need an electrical panel upgrade. They're great for small homes, ADUs and point-of-use sinks. A heat pump tank often uses less energy for a whole family.

Where can a heat pump water heater go?

It needs some open air around it and a spot that doesn't get too cold — garages and large utility rooms are typical in LA. It also needs a condensate drain and usually a dedicated electrical circuit. We check all of this on site.
